Why Juneteenth matters:
Juneteenth (June 19) is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. Often referred to as “America’s Second Independence Day”, it marks the date in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free the last enslaved Black Americans.
