Why Juneteenth matters: Juneteenth (June 19) is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. Often referred to as “America’s Second Independence Day”, it marks the date in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free the last enslaved Black Americans.
SOJOURNER KINCAID ROLLE – Special footage of the acclaimed poet reading: “Free At Last” Who is Sojourner Kincaid Rolle (1943-2023)? A beloved and internationally acclaimed poet, playwright, environmental educator, and peace activist. She was the Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara, CA from 2015-2017.
What is Ring Shout? The Santa Barbara Ring Shout Project (SBRSP), is a local cultural and performance group that preserves the oldest known surviving African American performance tradition in North America.

If you’d like to know why, and have a few glasses of wine, join us at our upcoming Wine & Opera Festival event. Straight from New York to Santa Barbara.
In collaboration with La Cumbre Center for Creative Arts, New York’s newly established nonprofit, Wine & Opera Festival will be hosting a fundraising event on Friday, June 26th, from 5–8 PM.
The Wine & Opera Festival is a multidisciplinary cultural event combining live opera performances, wine tastings, education, and community involvement in a fun and engaging environment.
The event on June 26th will feature soprano Crystallia Spileou and tenor Michael Karl who live and perform in New York, singing several arias and duets from the operatic repertoire. The musical selections will be paired with wines from La Vieille Ferme and Marqúes de Cáceres alongside live painting from a La Cumbre Plaza featured artist.
