LYDIA JABLONSKI

I am a street photographer and animator. I seek out activated spaces where people move in a special way. Grown-ups slow down, look around, and gather together. Kids run, skip and leap. Their feet rarely touch the ground. Festivals and tourist spots have this activity built-in but everyday spaces can also become activated by their shape (stairwells, street corners, building entries) or by the time of day (after school, rush hour, sunset).

Through the lens, these complex spaces are transformed into a parallel reality where people come in all sizes. Dwarfs and giants play together and everyday things such as umbrellas, balloons, bicycles and dogs feel like talismans to be counted and tracked. Although thousands of pictures are accumulating, I continue to shoot because each time outside informs my editing. I edit the images in short time lapse sequences or longer videos. I have reintroduced the people in the pictures back into the public space with installations and performances: acting as a street vendor, creating flipbooks, projecting onto buildings. More recently I have been concentrating on making large-scale prints and created a conceptual fake news website (all images and text by created by me): http://socialdistancereport.com
