HELLO SPRING 2021!

New Season, New Artists, New Art

GREGORY BEEMAN

Gregory Beeman joined LCCCA in March 2021. He is a passionate visual artist who is recognized for his unique application of Veniciano plaster with pigment on board. With trowel in hand and open for inspiration, he creates spectacular dimensions of space, color and light. All environs inspire his work – the ocean, the mountains, the fields and the urbanity of The Funk Zone. He is also an accomplished musician.  From rock and roll to French Cabaret he brings his provisional ability, with piano and accordion squeezebox to transfigure both space and time. This same capacity informs his art. Each piece is lush with nature’s beauty as well as the grit of the human condition, hidden amidst the fields of color. See his abstract landscapes on the walls of the Fine Line Gallery.

Bill Bachino work
BILL BACHINO

A U.S. Navy man, Bill Bachino spent thirty-five years as a pile-driver and welder working on land and over water. After retirement, Bill continued welding small art creations. Each sculpture is hand-made from mild steel – one part at a time. For example, arm tops and bottoms are separate, cut, shaped and welded together. Hands are made from separate pieces and welded in place. An entire piece takes 2-6 months to complete.

His sculpture always starts with the head, and a storybook character – or two – begin to appear as he works. Tree Man resembles Treebeard, or Fangorn in Sindarin the tree-giant character in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Two Mermaids became Fred & Ethel Merman; and Lila & Shelby features his granddaughter riding a giant turtle. Visit the cast of characters on his pedestal stage in Illuminations Gallery.

SPOTLIGHT ON CURRENT ARTISTS AND COLLABORATIONS

"The Jungle Inside" Lyz Rothman
"Path of Least Resistance" Lyz Rothman

Lyz Rothman is a leader in our LCCCA cooperative community. Her vibrant spirit in contagious. From New York with a BFA from Savannah College of Art & Design, it is not a surprise that she brings untethered inspiration to our creative center. She lives out loud and in true color, evoking curiosity in her endeavors. Every path Lyz walks has different dimensions exemplified by her art. You never know what she will create next, though you can count on it being provocative and out of the proverbial box. Her process is her passion and refuge. Whether Lyz is painting, sculpting, drawing or making jewelry, the common thread in her work is her tendency to focus on simple objects that allow her mind to rest while allowing her boisterous creativity to soar.

"Memories – Closer" Marie Arnold and Juan Trejo A Collaborative Endeavor

Collaboration with Juan

Marie Arnold, an artist at the Fine Line Gallery, is an abstract expressionist who paints with acrylic, creates collages and mixed media artworks. Juan Trejo is an abstract painter in the Hangout Gallery. His work consists of acrylic, oil pastel and vine charcoal and falls somewhere between abstract and representational art.

Describing their collaboration, Juan says, “One day back in December, Marie and I were doing an informal art critique of each other’s work. I was surprised – the landscapes that I first saw in her paintings weren’t there; she described her paintings as suggested emotions. Because we saw very different things, I asked if she would be interested in a collaboration. It’s not easy for an artist to let go of their own work. However, Marie went to work on three pieces that she left unfinished and was eager to allow a fresh sense of surprise to complete her work.”

Marie and Juan envisioned a mixed media painting/collage that would capture memories. Marie first made the collage on a 14×16″ canvas. She placed down what spoke to her, including elements of ephemera. She then gave the work to Juan to “do whatever he wanted to do.” Marie was attracted by the depth of field and playfulness of Juan’s work, and Juan was intrigued by the use of ephemera in Marie’s piece. Their collaboration allowed them to speak about their understanding and thoughts regarding memories and continued the discussion visually through their artwork. The artwork paints the picture of how some memories seem to grow and become more colorful each time you re-remember and bring the “memories closer.”

Marie adds, “I added a bit of collage to my paintings and was willing to let Juan take over. I like a bit of humor in my work, and Juan had it. I love his work – the more you look at it, the more you see. LCCCA is a group of three separate galleries, but our intention is to cooperate and exchange ideas with the intention to grow as artists.”

Rather than feel halted by the pandemic, Marie and Juan were motivated to revitalize their art and create something new and re-imagined. You can see their collaborations in the Fine Line and Hangout Galleries.

"Green Woman" Daniel Landman
Cell Life
"Cell Life" Daniel Landman
Attending Brooklyn’s PRATT institute and spending summers at the Figurative Institute in Manhattan studying classic painting and drawing, it is no wonder Daniel Landman is an extraordinary master at his figurative works of art. Daniel works in a variety of mediums, from traditional oil paint on canvas and clay to found objects like old railroad nails, driftwood, bone and stone. Many of his pieces are assemblages of multiple media, carefully selected to tell the story of the piece. Starting from figurative reality, his pieces transcend into a world of myths and legends, and physical likeness becomes archetypes of the past which are still valid today.

Daniel is able to employ multiple contrasts in texture as well as harness the elemental powers of water, earth, fire and wind, from the sculpture of Prometheus which mounts onto a fire pit, to a piece entitled Spring which floats in water. He says that these endless experiments with materials and means of expression are driven by the desire to understand what lies below the surface where the power comes from.

Daniel has a studio/gallery in Fine Line Gallery, has shown at the Bottoms Gallery, CC Galleries on Catalina Island, Contemporary Arts Forum, Faulkner Gallery with the Santa Barbara Sculptors Guild and Yuliya Lennon Art Studio and Gallery.
Pali X Mano's installation at the Friendship Center
Pali X Mano's installation at the Friendship Center

Some of you will know Pali X Mano as Artist in Residence (since 1999) for the Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Parade and Celebration each year. He creates the giant inflatable floats – thirty to sixty feet long – with aerial acrobats dancing inside, no less. He has also designed headdresses for the whimsical characters who accompany the floats. You are likely to spot him around town or walking Santa Barbara beaches. Pali is an art piece himself, from head to toe – from cap to cleats.

However, you might not know that Pali has a studio at Illuminations Gallery. There, he makes magic with recycled materials and displays several of his large, untamed mixed media paintings and assemblages.
You can also see his current outdoor installation – “Love-Dance in the Air” at the Friendship Center in Santa Barbara.

And if you’re wondering about his unusual name – “Pali” is Hungarian for Paul, “X” stands for experimental artist, and “Mano” means “Little Mischief,” and that he is!
